Your tyres are the only contact between your vehicle and the road and are therefore one of the most important safety features on your vehicle. You should be checking the condition of your tyres and their pressures at least every 2 weeks and always before undertaking long journeys. If you can see or suspect any of the following then it may be time for them to be changed.
Reduced tread depth
Cracks and splits in the sidewall
Blisters and slits
Any vibration when driving
The manufacture date
Check your tyre tread with the 20p test
This is what a road legal tyre should look like, this tyre will have maximum performance in braking in the wet, and may be the difference in you having a collision
If you can see some of the outer edge of the 20p, then your tyres may be illegal and will have a bigger braking distance in the wet.
This test should be performed on all parts of the tread, on all four tyres.
YOU COULD FACE A MAXIMUM OF 3 POINTS ON YOUR LICENSE AND A FINE OF UP TO £2500 PER TYRE
Checking the manufacturing date of your tyres is straightforward. Just look for the DOT markings on the side of the tyre these will give you the week and year that your tyres were made. If your tyres are over 5 years old you should consider replacing them.
